The Body Image vs Body Size Quiz

Individuals with a history of overweight or who were teased about their weight are more likely to misperceive their size and shape.

Using diagrams like the one above researchers have demonstrated this time and time again. The individual selects their body size and their selection is compared to that of a group of external observers.

Recognize that your body image is not real, it is how you feel at that particular instance in time. It can change, be changed and positive body image can be practiced.

Many women believe they will be happier if they are thinner, however, research has shown that those who do meet the 'body-beauty' ideal are just as likely to be unhappy about their appearance as women who do not reach this ideal.

Consider where you fall on this diagram and consider where you would like to be. Research suggests that you are likely closer to your goal than you think.

There is one very important

There is one very important lesson to be learned - a person's image of themself is better served if they recognize that their physical body is a very small part of their overall being. It is how an individual meets their challenges and carries their experiences that make them the person that their family, friends, and community come to love and respect. None of this happens because of the shape that their body may, or may not, look like in a diagram.

Thanks for shedding light on

Thanks for shedding light on this complicated and ever frustrating topic. Young women are under incredible pressure (as are men I'm sure) to fit a certain mold. It is not only difficult to teach our children that body shape is not central to who they are.... but even more difficult is to walk our talk.

It is funny that we put all

It is funny that we put all of our eggs in one basket (the scale) rather than thinking of body size, shape and so on. Smaller isn't always better. I needed this reminder.

when I worked with college

when I worked with college aged women (counseling. group.) I was always shocked how this seemingly trite exercise NEVER FAILED TO SHOCK THEM.

how without fail they thought they were far bigger than they really were.

It just like BMI - people

It just like BMI - people tend to forget that everything is so generalised, and just because the format fits for someone else, doesn't mean its right for you!

Hello       I think i can be

Hello

I think i can be described as a person who is 'bombarded' b the media.

Im 15 years old and ever since i was a child (around 10) i have always thought that there was this certin image that all girls must have. It all started when i was younger i could have been described as abit chubby with baby fat. As i got older (12) i started starving myself and even sometimes perging. I did this onto i had almost no curves, no hips, and no lower behind. I was anerexic and didnt even know it. It was like, when i was larger people (mostly family called me fat) and when i was thinner people called me anerexic and 'to skinny'. Because of this sudden change in my weght, my body suffered for it. Now i will have (hopfully) minor complications for the rest of my life. Even now that i am at a normal weight, i still have constant fights with myself about being to fat or skinny. It never ends, and i hate it because its almost every girl that deals with this. I blame the media, because every year sadly, more girls are being warped into thinking that the only perfection is to be like the women in the magazines, the models in the clothes ect.

I have seen this done before where people were actually wrong on their body size, and i just wanted to thank you for pointing it out.
