Recent quotes from my clients at Healthy Weights:
I just wish the holidays were over.
I can’t even enjoy myself at the party.
Why is food always the ‘main’ event?
Most wonderful time.. more like the most stressful time!
My personal favorite:
I couldn’t enjoy a single conversation because there was cheesecake and and a chocolate fountain erupting in the corner of my eye!
First, recognize that it is natural to feel anxiety about any ‘event’ that might derail your plan.
The trick is to view these challenges as a chance to try new tactics and most importantly, a new way of thinking.
Try changing your approach from being one of PASS or FAIL. Also consider adding some other measures of success beyond food and body weight.
Imagine passing the food test, but failing to have any fun because your entire evening was emotionally spent on not giving into temptation.
Provide the people you are spending time with your full attention, this will drown out the calls from the dessert table and your dieting mind.
Take a gentler approach and compare your behavior at this years gatherings to last years. It certainly isn’t fair to compare with what you would have eaten had you stayed home!
In my next post I’ll discuss how you can use skills, rather than ‘white knuckling’ willpower to not only stay on track but free your mental resources to fully enjoy the food and the people that surround you this holiday season.

This is so obvious that I wonder if it's worth mentioning, but here goes. I was one of the first to arrive at Thanksgiving dinner, and there were lots of appetizers. I hung out in a different room from where the food was and stayed engaged in conversation, and before you know it it was dinner time and I hadn't eaten any appetizers! The so-obvious-you-may-have-missed-it lesson? Stay physically (and mentally) away from the food, and keep your mind (and eye contact) focused on PEOPLE instead!

Those are the best kinds of lessons. The trick is to take the lesson repeatedly.
They seem to have an expirery date!
Thanks for sharing Susan

I read & heard a couple stories how people just changed the focus... the first comment is great... keep busy with conversation, have a low cal drink or water in your hand to keep your hands busy OR change the focus by doing something totally different. It is hard sometimes if it is a family thing BUT if not, why not get out of the house for a movie or a walk..... make healthy dishes for options for you.. that is always my go to. I bring things I can eat & feel fine about BUT I also plan for the one or two things I will splurge on.. I do not eat everything in sight but make choices about what I really want rather than eating just to eat it.
We all have to find what works for us. It can be stressful but by changing things up & planning ahead, we can do it!
